How We Work
Dahlem Criminal Defence lawyers will guide you through the criminal justice system.
The criminal justice system is a complex and ever-changing web of courts, police forces, judges, prosecutors, federal and provincial governments, all of which is administered by individuals with their own ideas and opinions. First and foremost, Dahlem Criminal Defence is your guide through the process. These steps are:
1. Collect All Information
The prosecution must provide you and your lawyer full disclosure. This is all relevant information in the possession of the state. It includes police notes, video, radio logs… anything relevant.
We will obtain as detailed a statement from you as you can remember.
We will find potential witnesses, including people not interviewed by the police, and we will find out what they know. You need to tell us about anything you think can help you.
2. Assess Your Charges
No matter what criminal charge you are facing, you have a defence.
Once all the information is available, we will assess whether there is a reasonable likelihood of conviction.
3. Decide Your Best Strategy
We will discuss with you the many possible strategies and advise you on how you should proceed.
There are many resolutions that are not guilty pleas. There are guilty pleas to lesser offences and other ways of proceeding that lower your risk of conviction, and your risk of serious consequences to your life.
4. Choose Your Path of Defence
Resolution, Negotiation or Trial.
Are you going to plead not guilty and have a trial? Or are you going to resolve the matter in some other fashion?
Resolution and Negotiation are often better options than a Trial. A trial has many risks, and it is not always the best way to proceed.
We will do everything possible to put you in the most favourable position possible, without need of a trial.
5. Going to Trial
If a trial is your best option, we have the experience to get you the best outcome.
Dahlem Criminal Defence has conducted hundreds of trials, from mischief to murder, with a great deal of success for clients. We will work with you from the moment you hire us to put you in the best position possible for a “not guilty” verdict at the end of a trial.
